The Madaba Plains Project is one of the longest-lived, continuously running archaeological excavation projects in the Middle East. Spanning four decades, the project has engaged 1,800 participants and was one of the first Near Eastern archaeology projects to incorporate ethnoarchaeology and environmental studies, construct a 'food-systems' approach to archaeology, and to computerize procedures for archaeological data acquisition and analysis. The project has advanced both the theoretical basis and field methods of archaeology in the southern Levant. 'The Madaba Plains Project' features the latest results of collaborative research in central Jordan - ranging across life and society in the Bronze Age to the Islamic and early modern periods. Key scholars in the field examine the contribution of the Madaba Plains project to the archaeology of the southern Levant and its legacy across Jordan and beyond.
